Rochester Curling League: FAQs

I’ve never curled before, are you sure you want me to join?
Yes!!!  We love to teach new curlers the amazing sport of curling and don’t worry, there will be other new curlers too.

What if I can’t make one or two of the weeks?
Don’t worry, we can make it work.  You can ask a friend to fill in for you and if they pay the $20 membership fee they can come and join us!  You can also find another member of another team to fill in for you if they aren’t playing that week.

I want to sign up a team with more than four people so we have spares, is that ok?
Yes, we allow up to 6 people to register with one team which would allow you to have spares. Each person must pay the $20 membership fee but the team price would be $320 regardless of the number of team members (4, 5 or 6).

I can’t bend down into that position I’ve seen on TV, can I curl?
Yes!  Curling really is for everyone, there are adaptations that can be made to the delivery and pretty much everyone can curl.

What should I bring when I come to the rink to curl?
Be sure to bring a clean pair of shoes to change into when you arrive, the flatter the bottoms the better the shoes.  Wear layers, the rink is chilly and there may be sometimes when you are moving a lot and want to take off layers and other times that you may want more layers on.  Wear clothes that are flexible, jeans are often not a great idea because they don’t allow you as much flexibility as you may want.

Is there any equipment required?
To learn how to curl you don’t need any additional equipment.  Once you are as hooked on the sport as we are you can buy curling shoes and a broom which will help you in the long run.  However, these are not essential to start curling.

How much does it cost to join?
Our membership fees are frequently being updated and changed as we are a brand new club in Rochester, as of now the fees are $20 to be a member and $80 per league.

I don’t know how to ice skate, will that be an issue?
No!  Curling actually doesn’t involve any ice skating, if you were to use ice skates during curling you would actually hurt the ice.  We wear curling shoes.

Can anyone curl?
Yes!  Given our current setup, we only offer curling to adults older than 21 years of age. However, we are looking to develop our youth curling, stay posted for details coming in the future.  See the following links for wheelchair curling and stick curling:

What’s with the brooms?
Brooms rub the ice in front of the curling stone which warms the top surface of the ice reducing friction and changing the rate of stone slow down and the curl.  Sweeping is often the most strenuous aspect of the sport.

How can I learn more about the history of the sport?
Wikipedia has a great article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curling
You can also ask any of our club members!

I can’t curl in this league, are there others offered?
